Automatic answering machine for Android: how to set it up

1. Problem: Phone rings, and you are working

You run a business, climb ladders, install systems, or are simply in a meeting. The phone rings at the worst possible moment. You can't pick up, so you reject the call or let it ring endlessly.

What does the customer do? Often they leave no voicemail at all. Carrier voicemail on Android often plays a generic "please leave a message after the beep", and many callers hang up instead. For you, it's just a missed call notification that is easy to miss in the thick of other things.

How can you solve this on Android?

1. Hiring a secretary: Effective solution, but expensive. Employee cost, taxes, equipment is a minimum of thousands per month.
2. Traditional voicemail: Available from your carrier, but it stores audio unless your carrier and phone support more. Google's Phone app help (checked 19 October 2026) says visual voicemail depends on the carrier and country, and voicemail transcription is only available in English and Spanish, on Android 8.0 and up, with selected carriers.
3. "Voicemail" apps: There are apps in the Google Play store, but they often have ads, require complex forwarding configuration, or drain your Android's battery running in the background.
4. Answering everything: Trying to be "on the phone" 24/7 ends in burnout and errors in work performed.

4. How Heilo handles missed calls

5. How to set it up on Android

1. Create a Heilo account and set up your mailbox number. Record the greeting in your own voice or type the text for Heilo to read out.
2. In the Heilo panel, open the forwarding instructions for your number. They show the destination number and a ready-made forwarding code, and you can set how long the phone rings before the call is forwarded.
3. On the phone, open the Phone app, go to its settings and find Call forwarding. You can also type the ready-made code from the Heilo panel on the keypad and press call.
4. Set forwarding when unanswered and, if you need it, when unreachable. Enter the Heilo number. Do not choose "always forward" if you still want to answer calls yourself.
5. Call your number from another phone and do not answer. Listen to the greeting, leave a short message and hang up.
6. Check the recording and transcript in the Heilo panel, and the SMS if notifications are on. Then make a second test call and answer it normally.

Does Heilo work on every Android phone?

It does not need an app, so the phone model matters less than your carrier: your plan must allow forwarding to the Heilo number. Confirm this with your carrier and test the specific SIM or eSIM.

How much does the Heilo answering machine cost?

Does forwarding also record calls I answer?

No. Missed-call forwarding only saves messages left in the mailbox. To capture a call you answer on your own number, use Heilo Select: on a second line you call Heilo and merge the calls (your phone and carrier must support conference calls), and Heilo records from the moment it joins. Heilo Line gives you a +48 business number from Heilo and records calls made and taken through it automatically; outbound calls start in the panel with Call via Heilo. With Heilo Line, a call you dial from the phone's ordinary Phone app does not go through Heilo, so it is not recorded.
